Mother Nature, the Supreme Illusionist
Mother Nature is an illusionist. She tricks us into believing in an infinite number of untruths. Perhaps the greatest untruth of all was the belief that people once had that the earth was flat. Believe it or not, some people in the modern world still believe that, claiming that pictures of men on the moon and pictures of earth taken by astronauts were taken fabricated by a conspiracy involving the Federal government, the military-industrial complex and Hollywood.
Lower animals are no less subject to Mother Nature’s sleight of hand. She makes bugs that look like sticks, moths with fearsome large spots that look like the eyes of a creature a predator should avoid and thousands of creatures that seem to disappear when they move into a stand of grass or canopy of green that matches them in color.
As every magician knows, our senses – not their wizardry – are the ultimate sources of illusions.
Click on the accompanying graphic to make it bigger. Stare at the four dots, upper center, for about 30 seconds. Then take a deep breath, close your eyes, lean your head back, and wait for an astonishing presence. All but about 10 to 15 percent of people who do this will sustain a memorable experience.
I’ll tell you in the next post why you experienced what you did.
